When something looks wrong in a colony, precise observation is more useful than immediately assigning a diagnosis. Record where the issue was seen, what the brood or adult bees looked like, how widespread it appeared and whether photographs were taken.
Keep observations separate from interpretation. “Several perforated cappings in this area of sealed brood” is a reproducible observation. A diagnostic label may require additional evidence. This distinction makes the record more useful if the colony is checked again or the photographs are reviewed later.
