A split creates more than another box of bees: it creates a new branch in the colony history. Good records should preserve where the bees, queen and queen cells came from, what remained in the original hive and where each resulting colony moved.
Give every resulting colony its own identity immediately. Record the parent colony, split date, queen status, brood transferred, queen cells and destination. If the original queen moves into a nuc, that should be clear in both histories.
Preserve lineage rather than overwriting it
Do not erase the old colony record simply because its physical box or number changes. The value lies in maintaining the relationship between parent and daughter colonies. This becomes particularly useful when comparing queen performance or selling a nuc later.
