There is no single inspection interval that is right for every colony throughout the year. Inspection frequency should reflect the season, colony condition, weather, management objective and what you found last time.
During periods when colonies are building quickly or swarm preparation is a concern, the interval between inspections may need to be shorter. At other times, unnecessary disturbance can provide little benefit. A colony with an unresolved queen issue or a specific follow-up action may also need a different schedule from a neighbouring colony that is progressing normally.
Let the previous inspection guide the next one
A useful record should answer two questions: what did I find, and when do I need to look again? If you record a time-sensitive observation, create the next action immediately. This is more reliable than trying to remember every colony in the apiary.
