Early-season inspections are an opportunity to establish a clean baseline for each colony. Record adult bee coverage, brood extent and stages, queen evidence, stores, temperament, equipment condition and anything requiring a follow-up.
Avoid comparing colonies using memory alone. Recording the same core fields gives you a more useful starting point for seeing which colonies expand quickly, which need additional attention and how queen performance develops.
